Agate Hill

Agate Hill

Agate Hill’s name says it all. It is a great location for finding colorful specimens of agate. Just about every rock you find on this tiny hill is some sort of agate. Most of it is considered good quality. The best collecting at Agate Hill is on the hill itself, but you may find more agate scattered throughout the surrounding flatlands. Just take the time to hike around and see what the area has to offer. Most of the agate you will find at Agate Hill is clean and solid, but some will have internal fractures. The prized pieces of agate are the red and black ones. Since they are the prized colors they will be tougher to find.

Agate hill is very close to the town of Panguitch. Travel 4.5 miles south of Panguitch on Highway 89. At 4.5 miles you will see a turn off on the east side of the road. Turn here and travel 3 3/10th miles on a well maintained dirt road. On this road you will pass through a range gate. Make sure you close it after you go through. A sandy wash is located at the 2 ½ mile mark from the highway. Some passenger cars may have a problem passing through this.  Once you reach your mileage the hill we be on the right hand side.
