Clear Lake

Clear Lake

Clear Lake is a great place for collecting labradorite.  These crystals are faceted and can be found in sizes measuring up to one inch in length.  The labradorite crystallized in cavaties of the lava forms the knoll on the top of the hill. To get the best crystals bring a chisel and a hammer to break through the host rock. Once you break through the rock carefully open it and examine the material with a flashlight. The flashlight beam will help pick up a beam from a crystal. If this sounds too hard, you can always stick to the bottom of the hill and look for the crystals in the sand. The best collecting times are in the early morning and late afternoon. Walk with the sun to your back and look for the crystals on the ground.

To get to Clear Lake head south on Highway 257 13 ½ miles from where it intersects with Highway 6/50. At that point some ruts will be seen heading east towards a small mountain a short distance away. Follow the ruts ½ mile, as they go through a shallow pass to the far side of the southernmost peak. Now you’ve reached Clear Lake!
