Painter Springs
Painter Springs is found in the west central part of the state. At Painter Springs you can find specimens of quartz, pyrite, garnet, and pink feldspar. It takes some time and patience to find the best pieces, and most are small, but chunks containing more than one mineral are found throughout. Another bonus at Painter Springs is the amount of wildlife living in this region. This spring is a large supplier of water for the local wildlife.
From Delta, go west on U.S. 6-50 about 60 miles and take the gravel road to the right near milepost 33. It should be marked with a sign indicating “Painter Springs”. At 9.4 miles an intersection with a water tank is reached. Turn east toward the mountain for 1.8 miles to Painter Springs. Portions of the road can be rugged. Be advised.
